Profile

About Me:
I began writing around 1989 after attending a family reunion, where my cousin, Nora Roberts, handed me a copy of one of her books. Having always loved great historical fiction, my heart got racing toward a desire to write. Or I might truly admit that the desire was rekindled. In many of my stories, I write about the struggles endured by early colonists, with a mixture of both American and English history. Readers will find that my books do not follow a genre formula. I allow each story to take on a life of its own.

I has several writing projects going on right now. Last year, I finished the rough for Surrender the Wind, a story of romance and mystery set in Virginia and England. It went through a round of revisions in August, and is now complete, or at least until an editor whips out a red pen and decorates the manuscript with it.

I'm looking for an agent!

I began writing Beside Two Rivers in late 2006, of which I have several chapters in rough draft, with tons of notes and the story ruminating in my head. You might be curious about the title. Along the borders of Maryland and Virginia, two rivers converge, the Potomac and the Shenandoah. The story begins there, in a breath-taking setting as the Revolutionary War comes to a close.

There are other novels next on my list for revisions and will be ready for submissions in the near future. These novels were previously pod published and are out of print. It is not uncommon for a writer to have several manuscripts sitting on their desk. I have the beginnings of a great mystery novel started entitled Seven Golden Candlesticks.

I am also the editor for Stepping Stones Magazine for Writers. http://www.freewebs.com/steppingstonesforwriters/

Nora and Bruce's Hotel

Whether we are rich and famous, or dirt poor and unknown to the rest of the world, none of us is immune from tragedy. Yesterday morning was freezing. Snow had fallen the night before, and we had icy conditions. It was extremely cold working on renovations inside the old Boon Inn. A construction worker accidentally tripped over a hose that knocked over a 100-gallon propane tank connected to a portable heater inside the old Boone Hotel, in Boonsboro, Maryland, causing a massive fire that took out… Continue

I can't say anything very cogent about the categories in historical fiction because my own work is so marginal to the field. But I think you should stick to your own ways of doing things. "To thine own self be true..." because in anything so personal as writing you will usually find it impossible to fit into anybody else's worldview anyway. I tried once being Harold Robbins -- it didn't work!

Rita,

Those are good questions. We are a trade publisher with trade terms. We have book store availability, which is all any publisher can promise. I hope this helped. If not, you can contact Jessica Davis at info@livingwaterspc.com.

Hi Rita,
Thanks for commenting on m page. No, that photo I use is from the Showtime tv series entitled, "The Tudors" of actress Natalie Dormer who played Queen Anne Boleyn. Since she is the subject of my book I am currently writing, I chose it to keep me focusssed.

Hi Rita - thanks for taking the time to read the blurb on The Second Mrs. Douglass. With Barack Obama and John McCain contemplating debates that will be modeled along the lines of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, it seems that everything old is new again. Viva historical fiction!

Rita,

Oh, don't I know it! I'm trying to do a first edit on my next project before I send it to my editor...and then I need to get busy on my next project. How in the world do all these authors kick out a book every quarter, do marketing and promo, write a zillion blogs, maintain a website...It just makes my mind boggle.

I'm glad you like my site's new look. Tiff Stockton did the actual designing for me but I did the layout and supplied the images. It was a huge amount of work, but I think it turned out great!

BTW, talking about blogging, I'm starting a new blog on my American Patriot Series. As if there isn't enough to do.... Ha! I'll put up the link as soon as it's ready to release.
