Dear Kimberly,
Thanks for the message. I'm glad that I inspired you. If you love writing stick with it, even if you never get published. Your children and their children will be glad you did. Love writing more than the business side of this industry. In other words love writing so much that rejection letters from agents or publishers will not cause you to quit. You might skin your knee a few times, but put a band aid on it and move on.
I began writing in 1989. I had a bump in the road with a print on demand publisher that lied to me. For the last two years I have been submitting to agents...getting rejection letters. This past year a few agents sent me personal notes with suggestions and encouragement. Even though they turned me down, this gave me hope. I went back and refined my manuscript.
Learn all you can about writing. Practice does make perfect...or close to it. Read lots of books on writing fiction, how to develop your characters called 'fleshing them out', the use of dialogue, show don't tell, eliminating 'he said' and using action sentences instead. Work on refining descriptive narrative so that your reader 'sees' scene. The best writing advice I ever got was let your reader see, hear, taste, and touch, what your character is seeing, hearing, tasting, and touching.
Your book sounds great. I like Simon and Margaret, and their professions. Have your read Dianne Gabaldon's Outlander series? They are time travel.
Another thing is to network with other writers. I joined American Christian Fiction Writers two years ago and it was the best move I've made. I have connected with so many fine writers, some of which are best selling authors. Lots of encouragement.
I love the paranormal blended with the historic. When it's well-written it's very moving. Goose-flesh kind of responses arise! Best of luck, grace, ease and joy in your endeavors.
