About Me:
I'm 40 and I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, with my hubby and our two cats, Bob & Tiger. I have a day job which pays the bills, but in my spare time I've been working on two historical novels.

One is set in 1140s Gloucester and Normandy. A knight has been murdered and undersheriff Geoffrey de Mortagne - caught between both sides in the civil war, has to investigate. He meets with the approval of the dead knight's daughter. Until circumstances change.

The other WIP is set in Scotland in 1720. A young lady of good upbringing is compromised. Her shocked family send her away to her Godmother who lives in a manor overlooking the wild lochs and hills of the Highlands. There the girl discovers the wild ways of the Highlanders she had been warned about. Especially her Godmother's nephew has much to hide. But the discovery could cost her dearly.

I have posted excerpts of my WIPs on my blog at www.stephpatterson.wordpress.com - please feel free to pop in and have a nosy. You'll also find posts about my recent travels, weddings and rants in general. :-)

I have also recently started a review blog of historical fiction and romance - please have a look at http://historicalsreviewed.wordpress.com ! It's still in the early stages but I hope to take it further over the years.

I love medieval history, in particular that of England, Normandy, Scotland & Italy. For pleasure, I've studied different historical eras, incl. modules about the Tudors and Scotland between 1100-1707. I also visited Normandy in 2007 and was thrilled to walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror, Henry II and the incredible Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Frustration...

... about my writing course!

A year ago, I began to study a module 'Novel Writing for Beginners' online, which I found very useful at the time, as it pointed out some vital issues (layout, pov, etc). I successfully completed it, quite proud of myself, and started the follow-up module in November.

While at first I found that module useful, I now begin to despair. It appears our tutor (with a Creative Writing PHD but only published a short story, no novel) is such a stickler to writing rules tha… Continue

Discipline - the bane of my life!

Just completed another successful Sunday afternoon writing. As the day job doesn't leave me much time to sit down and write during the week, I've made Sundays my 'writing days'. My poor other half has to entertain himself - though that's quite easy with an xbox360!

So Sundays are spent between work for my Novel Writing course and getting on with my writing. In the past year, I've changed the first four chapters twice, each time taking into account issues I'd come across in my studi… Continue

I can't believe it...

Christmas day seems so long ago. The build up to it was endless - with the first themed items on sale in early October. I tend to ignore them until December - the 'right' time IMHO to start preparing for Christmas.

Then, five days before the event, came my 39th birthday. This, my first day on a fortnight's leave, was a crisp winter's day with frost covering the car, garden fence and even the grass. My other half took me to a German Christmas market in Edinburgh, sampling food and m… Continue

Hello Stephanie,
I'm thrilled you read the interview. Thank you so much for telling me. So you are an F1 fan too. Who do you follow? Wasn't Vettel something special last race? He's so unaffected and happy. He's the only driver on the grid I could accept doing Michael's victory jump.

A true scots woman! I love Scotland. When I was there I got hooked on Typhoo tea and now I have to order it online because I can't stand American tea. I read some of your 1140 story and I sent your website link to another frinds who loves to write in that time period.

I hope someday to visit the land of my ancestors. On my mother's side we are related to the MacGregors and Robertsons of Scotland. On my husband's - the Camerons and Wallaces.

Hi Stephanie, please forgive my late reply to your question. In a nutshell, my novel begins in 1064 when (it is believed) Harold Godwinson, brother-in-law to Edward, King of England, was shipwrecked and held for ranson by Guy of Ponthieu. Guy was forced to surrender him to William, Duke of Normandy who, as Edward's cousin, considered himself heir to England's throne. My character, Wulfric (fictitious), is a life-long friend of Harold's. He is caught up in the events that led to the Norman Conquest and, with divided loyalty after Harold's oath to William, makes enemies on both sides. The greatest of which is Ranulf de Clare (fictitious), William's right-hand man and husband to Ariane, a Norman heiress who despises Ranulf and is hopelessly in love with Wulfric. The story tells of Wulfric's struggle to protect his home and people (aided by Ariane), from the horror of the Norman invasion, while maintaining his honour. I hope that wasn't too much information! Warm regards, Carol

Hi Stephanie, your interests are close to my own. I'm writing a novel set during the Norman Conquest (among other things ).I envy you living in Edinburgh, a place I have yet to visit, but it's on my 'to do' list. Look forward to hearing more from you. Kind regards, Carol
